Former Atlético Madrid assistant coach Germán Burgos popped onto Iker Casillas’ YouTube show days ago, spilling thoughts on a slew of topics.
He recounted his own career, named his idols, praised Atlético, and then turned his focus to Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé, sending a clear message to the French forward.
The ‘Mono’ challenged Mbappé’s leadership qualities within the Madrid locker room.
With Messi stepping aside, Lamine and Mbappé are poised to inherit the mantle. Will they live up to the legacy?
Casillas asked, “After Cristiano and Messi, who can pick up the torch?” Burgos answered bluntly: “Lamine. And Mbappé.”
He argued Mbappé is a unique talent but often isolates himself, like ten players versus one. Without better integration, he won’t reach Messi‑level dominance.
While his individual brilliance is undeniable, the Argentine insists the French star lacks the collective spirit needed to match leaders such as Messi. For my money, he still needs to grow into a true team catalyst.
Burgos added that Vinícius Jr. shows greater team‑first instincts. Mbappé may outscore, yet Vinícius covers space, chases down runs and helps defensively.
