Scaloni says Messi Unconcerned About Ballon d’Or

Lionel Messi's Ballon d'Or stance takes fresh twist as Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni reveals what Inter Miami star really thinks about his chancesWill the next ceremony finally crown him with a ninth trophy?

Messi’s Ballon d’Or chase has taken an unexpected turn, says Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni. The 39‑year‑old still ranks among the top names after another strong season with club and country, yet his mindset appears to have shifted dramatically. Can the veteran still see the prize as his goal?

The Argentine captain is one of 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with the ceremony set for October 26 in London. He now faces a field that includes Ousmane Dembélé, Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Rodri, all eager to add another chapter to their personal legacies.

Messi earned his nomination after a standout campaign at 39, guiding Inter Miami to an MLS Cup win while continuing to rack up goals and assists. His impact then spilled over to the international stage with La Albiceleste.

His display at the 2026 World Cup bolstered his case, as reports credit him with eight goals and four assists en route to the final. At an age where most fade, he remains a headline player throughout the tournament.

France Football has placed Messi on the final shortlist alongside several of the sport’s biggest stars. He is also one of the few nominees playing outside Europe, adding an extra layer to the debate over his odds.

Scaloni reveals Messi’s attitude toward the award

Scaloni believes Messi deserves another Ballon d’Or, yet insists the award no longer occupies his thoughts. “I think Messi deserves the Ballon d’Or, of course, he does. But I don’t think he’s too worried about it,” the coach told reporters on Thursday. For my money, his legacy speaks louder than any trophy.

The coach added, “I don’t think it concerns him much. As long as he’s on a pitch, it’s hard to argue he doesn’t deserve it. He isn’t fixated on it, but we’ll see what happens.”

Scaloni’s remarks suggest Messi’s drive is still rooted in playing the game rather than chasing another individual accolade. After a career filled with triumphs, the Ballon d’Or may now hold less weight for the Argentine legend.

Competitive Ballon d’Or race

Support for Messi’s nomination has poured in from teammates and coaches, who point to his performances for Inter Miami and Argentina as proof he remains worthy despite playing in MLS.

Lionel Messi attends the 67th Ballon d’Or ceremony at Théâtre du Châtelet on October 30, 2023 in Paris, France.

The race remains fierce, with Dembélé, Mbappé, Yamal, Kane, Haaland and Rodri also in contention. The voting will decide whether Messi adds a ninth Ballon d’Or to his collection.

Scaloni’s comments come as Messi prepares for an emotional farewell to the national team, set to face Benin on October 6 at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
