Fagioli Dreams of World Cup After Italy Recall

Nicolò Fagioli stating his greatest Italy dream is to play at the World CupFagioli celebrates his Conference League goal for Fiorentina on Feb 26, 2026 in Florence.

Fiorentina’s Nicolò Fagioli celebrates his goal in the Conference League knockout second leg at Stadio Artemio Franchi on Feb 26, 2026.

Fagioli confessed he never expected an Azzurri call‑up after two years, yet his biggest ambition now is to feature at the World Cup.

The 25‑year‑old hadn’t been summoned since Italy’s 4‑1 triumph over Israel in Oct 2024, but started in Monday’s 4‑1 win in Turkey.

That display could thrust him into contention for the Friday clash with France as Nations League Group A continues.

Fagioli relishes Italy opportunity

Italy line‑up poses before the Nations League group match against Turkey in Bursa on Sept 28, 2026.

“Facing a France side full of champions and with Zinedine Zidane on the touchline will be an indescribable emotion,” Fagioli told RAI Sport.

“It’s a wonderful challenge for all of us, really putting us to the test, because we have to prove what we can do on the pitch.”

The midfielder, who switched from Juventus to Fiorentina in Jan 2025, is back on international duty.

“I didn’t expect this call‑up, but I really hoped for it. My biggest dream is to go to the World Cup with Italy.”

Enrique Pere of Venezia challenges Nicolò Fagioli during the Serie A clash at Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo on Sept 11, 2026.

His career nearly derailed by an online‑gambling addiction, leading him to accept an eight‑month ban in 2023.

“I’ve matured a great deal, feel more confident and ready to step up, even if I’m still a sensitive guy and see some fragility as a strength.”

“I knew I needed to improve, and I have, so now I’m confident I can perform well.”

Italy’s showing against Turkey was night and day compared with the 2‑0 loss to Belgium a few days earlier. For my money, Italy’s resurgence hinges on players like Fagioli.

“It was vital to secure a result, both for the table and our confidence. The Belgium game didn’t go well, though we responded well after halftime,” Fagioli added.

Fagioli of Fiorentina featured in the Serie A encounter with Cremonese at Stadio Giovanni Zini on March 16, 2026. Will his rise help Italy clinch a World Cup spot?

Cagliari’s Alessandro Romano debuted for Italy in that match and drew criticism, but Fagioli rushed to defend him.

“Social media celebrates you when you’re shining, then tears you down at the first slip. Romano was unlucky – a misplaced pass led to the counter‑attack goal, but such things happen constantly in football.”

“Romano is young, will improve, and is a great lad. He shouldn’t worry; the whole squad backs him. We can’t control outside chatter, and it doesn’t matter to us.”
