Silvio Baldini has outlined his squad’s odds of reaching the 2027 European Championships as they gear up for decisive games against Albania and Poland next week.

Baldini speaks ahead of a crucial week for Italy’s U21s. Can the Azzurrini clinch the top spot in their final showdown?

The 2027 U21 Euros will feature 16 teams, with 14 places up for grabs alongside co‑hosts Albania and Serbia.

Nine groups decide the field: group winners and the best runner‑up qualify automatically, while the other eight runners‑up enter play‑offs for the final four spots.

Currently, Italy sit second in Group E and cannot drop below that spot with two qualifiers remaining.

The Azzurrini have recorded seven wins and one loss, yet trail leaders Poland, who boast an unbeaten eight‑match run.

Being the top second‑placed side gives Italy a solid shot at direct qualification even without topping the group. For my money, Baldini’s calm demeanor gives Italy a real edge.

Baldini fielded questions at Wednesday’s pre‑match press conference ahead of Thursday’s clash with win‑less Armenia. Italy face Poland on Monday.

“The long break helped us gel,” Baldini told reporters on Wednesday (via TMW).

“The lads already knew our basics, but spending time together, playing friendlies and sharing meals has bonded us on and off the pitch.

“We must approach each game eager to improve, focusing on performance and doing the right things. Whatever hurdles arise, we’ll give our best every match.”

Italy sit on 21 points with a +20 goal difference after eight games; Poland sit on 24 points and +21. With both sides meeting Monday, Baldini was asked if goal difference matters.

He answered: “Yes, it could matter, but we must dominate regardless of the opponent.

“We have to be ourselves and enjoy our football. Over‑focusing on the result might win us a game but hide our true style.”
