Can a youthful overhaul finally click for the USMNT? Mauricio Pochettino’s rebuild keeps flashing promising signs as he pilots a fresh batch of talent through this international window, eyeing the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The camp opened with a wave of first‑time call‑ups: Brian Schwake, Peyton Miller, Frankie Westfield, Mathis Albert, Zavier Gozo, Adri Mehmeti, Brooklyn Raines, Julian Hall, Justin Ellis, Cole Campbell and Cavan Sullivan, plus Diego Kochen and Neil Pierre.
USMNT sees a surge of debuts
Pochettino spread minutes deliberately, watching how the newcomers handled senior competition. The United States rolled past Peru 4‑1, with eleven debutants stepping onto the field.
Among the newcomers, Julian Hall and Justin Ellis shone, each finding the net. Hall kept his impact alive versus Chile, while Mathis Albert added another goal in a 4‑2 win.
Chile saw the twelfth debut when Brian Schwake entered in the second half, marking yet another first cap for the group.
Is Campbell the lucky 13?
Campbell remains on the sidelines, waiting.
The upcoming Mexico showdown could finally hand Campbell his moment. Pochettino has already reshuffled line‑ups between Peru and Chile, proving he isn’t shy about giving youngsters a chance.
Set for Saturday, Oct 3 in Glendale, Arizona, the match may turn into Campbell’s spotlight. All his fellow prospects have already debuted; he’s the lone name still absent from the list.
These friendlies let Pochettino broaden the talent pool and start building a new generation for looming international tests. In my view, the coach is reshaping the squad for a brighter future. If the youngsters click, the USMNT could be a serious contender at the 2028 Olympics.
