After bidding farewell to Argentina, Messi posted a heartfelt thank‑you on Wednesday, acknowledging fans who backed him for over two decades. The football great’s longtime rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, quickly weighed in.
Between two icons lies pure respect. As their dazzling careers wane, Messi and Ronaldo have amassed eight Ballons d’Or, a World Cup, two Copa Américas, and four Champions Leagues. Messi played his 208th and final Argentina match on Tuesday, a 3‑0 win over Benin.
At 39, the Albiceleste legend celebrated a farewell at Buenos Aires’ Monumental Stadium. The event moved the nation’s top scorer (126) and assist leader (67). Messi wrote on Instagram, “I played my last match yesterday and I already miss wearing the sky‑blue shirt. I know I made the right choice. It’s been an incredible journey, full of joy and pain, and every step was worth it.”
A very friendly CR7. Will his camaraderie hint at future collaborations?
Ronaldo didn’t waste time replying to his former Barcelona foe. “Leo, countless years defending your country and a story that will live forever,” the Portuguese star wrote amid his own national team turmoil. “All my respect for what you achieved with Argentina. Sending you a hug.” In my view, Ronaldo’s words show genuine admiration beyond rivalry.
In the rest of his post, Messi thanked his family for always being there, especially during tough times, as well as friends, teammates and every club that respected his feelings and allowed him to serve his country when the national jersey called.
The ‘Flea’ also paid tribute to Argentine icon Diego Maradona, who passed away in 2020 at 60. “I won’t forget Diego, who placed our nation where it belongs and, as I always say, I feel his presence guiding us from here and from the heavens with every step we take,” he added.
Messi isn’t hanging up his boots yet. His contract with Inter Miami runs through 2028, and he hasn’t set a retirement timeline.
