NFL players worldwide, raise your glasses!
You can now mime sipping a drink on the field without fearing league discipline.
The NFL and NFLPA jointly announced that mock‑drinking gestures won’t count as violations.
Full statement follows:
“Football stands as the world’s premier sport, and its athletes inspire millions, from youth leagues to the pros.
“The passion, emotion, and personality players display shape the game’s allure and forge bonds with fans everywhere. Good sportsmanship matters equally.
“To draw a clear line between expression and punishable conduct, officials reminded players this week that the following actions carry a 15‑yard unsportsmanlike penalty, a fine, or both:
“Gestures depicting violence, such as guns, weapons, or gang signs.
“Gestures showing smoking or drug use.
“Gestures of a sexual nature.
“Conversely, recent celebrations that imitate drinking will not be deemed violations nor attract discipline. This league‑wide guidance gives players clearer leeway for celebrations within the rules.
“When conduct lands in a gray zone, the league will reach out, offer direction, and only then consider penalties. Continued use could trigger future fines.
“Individual and team celebrations enrich the sport and deepen fan connections. Consistent guidance lets players express themselves while preserving the sportsmanship that defines NFL football.
Beyond scrapping overly‑sensitive bans on drink‑themed celebrations, the league now opts to warn before fining. If a celebration is later deemed unacceptable, only repeat offenders will be penalized.
For my money, this balanced approach should curb the bizarre wave of fines after Week 2 and let fans enjoy creative celebrations. Will the NFL keep this policy steady next season?
