In Bologna, Italy’s Antonio Vergara clashed with Turkey’s Eren Elmal during the Nations League showdown (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images).
Medical scans confirm Vergara suffered a calf strain on his first start, meaning Napoli will miss him for three to four weeks.
The winger dazzled off the bench in a 1‑1 draw in France before starting the 3‑1 win over Turkey last night.
He hobbled off in the second half, clutching his right calf, initially thought to be a simple cramp.
Verdict: Vergara’s injury sidelines Napoli’s rising talent until at least mid‑November, will his absence affect the club’s title push?
Later, tests at Pineta Grande Hospital revealed a medium‑grade tear of his right soleus muscle.
Sky Sport Italia reports the injury will keep him out for the next three to four weeks.
It’s another setback for coach Max Allegri, already coping with several injured squad members. For my money, losing Vergara now is a costly blow for Napoli.
On the bright side, Giovane, Leonardo Spinazzola and keeper Alex Meret have all rejoined full training.
Scott McTominay faces CONI tests tomorrow to determine his return after undergoing heart surgery for a mild arrhythmia last month.
