A 14‑year‑old was taken into custody on suspicion of a public‑order offence and later released on bail after a social‑media clip seemed to show a Coventry City supporter mocking Sunderland fans with Bradley Lowery’s photo.

Bradley, a Sunderland youngster who succumbed to a rare childhood cancer at six in 2017, won the affection of football fans worldwide.

He turned himself in to West Midlands Police, who confirmed an investigation is under way.

Coventry City, known as the Sky Blues, said they are reviewing Saturday’s Premier League footage, while Bradley’s mother Gemma released a heartfelt statement.

“Bradley’s brief life was dominated by a fight against cancer and treatments no child should endure,” she wrote on Instagram.

“Seeing that cherished memory twisted so cruelly truly breaks my heart,” she added.

“His beautiful spirit should be celebrated with love, not hatred,” Lowery said in a Bradley Lowery Foundation update, which funds and raises awareness for children with cancer.

She clarified she isn’t seeking hate toward the teen, but hopes he learns from his mistake.

A club spokesperson said, “Coventry City FC is aware of the circulating footage linked to an incident during Saturday’s Premier League match with Sunderland.”

“We do not tolerate offensive conduct and will work with authorities to decide the proper response,” the club added.

West Midlands Police said they recognise the distress the video caused and are keeping Bradley’s family informed as the probe proceeds.
