“Arrogant” and “insufficient”.

Defender Nordi Mukiele delivered a stark assessment of Sunderland’s early‑season woes after their surprise promotion.

He spoke up following a 2‑0 loss to Bournemouth, the club’s fourth straight defeat that now leaves them second from bottom.

Only insiders can verify his “arrogant” label given the recent dip in results and play.

After an eight‑year top‑flight exile they shocked everyone by clinching a Europa League spot at the first attempt. In my view, that meteoric rise was bound to strain their resources.

Have rivals exposed a hidden flaw? Is this the dreaded second‑season slump, or simply the burden of added European fixtures?

“Why? I don’t know. Maybe because we became arrogant, that’s my take,” he said.

Head coach Régis le Bris offered a milder but still disappointed verdict.

“It hurts because we’re not Sunderland, and that’s unacceptable.”

Is European competition hurting league form?

After seven games last campaign they sat on 11 points, ninth place, with three wins, two draws and two losses.

This season, at the same stage, they have four points from one win, one draw and five defeats.

“No excuses,” Le Bris asserted. “The calendar is packed. We’ll embrace it, but the current spot is far from ideal.”

Their league form hints at a relegation fight, yet in Europe they’re unbeaten, beating AZ Alkmaar and Portugal’s Torreense.

Both league losses followed those Europa wins, including an eight‑goal thriller versus unbeaten leaders Manchester City.

Former Newcastle keeper Shay Given, who briefly featured for Sunderland in 1996, doubts the squad can cope with the extra matches after a seventh‑place finish last term.

He does see a possible escape route.

“They overachieved by reaching Europe,” Given noted.

“I’m not sure the roster can handle a multi‑front challenge. You need depth, and that’s a tall order. They sit second‑bottom now.”

“Only seven games have passed, but the schedule is relentless. Premier League survival is the priority. I hope Le Bris can steer them clear.”

Sunderland splashed £161 million on 15 newcomers after promotion in summer 2025.

This summer they spent roughly £60 million on five signings, while retaining key figures like captain Granit Xhaka and striker Brian Brobbey, who is sidelined with a hamstring issue.

Facing Bournemouth—winless in the league and fresh from Thursday’s Europa match—should have been a welcome test.

Yet the Black Cats made life easy for the hosts at Vitality Stadium.

New loanee Kevin Danso, on loan from Tottenham, was pressured by Evanilson before Marcus Tavernier’s sixth‑minute opener.

Danso was dismissed in the 17th minute after bringing down the Brazilian striker on a clear chance.

In the second half, Omar Alderete’s weak backpass to keeper Robin Roefs gifted Evanilson the winner for the Cherries.

Opta reports Sunderland have the most errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season, five in total.

Alderete joins Danso and Hull’s Konstantinos Tzolakis as the only players with multiple such errors.

They have conceded 14 goals, only outscored by Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town, more than double last season’s tally after seven games.

With just six goals scored, their three shots on Sunday—none on target—were the fewest attempts by any side this campaign.

Their schedule has featured Manchester City, champions Arsenal and in‑form Brighton, making the start anything but easy.

“It’s only the beginning,” Mukiele said. “You can accept it, get back to work, and I still believe we can climb again.”

“What we want starts in training; we haven’t done enough, and it shows on the pitch.”

“You can’t lie about football; today I won’t claim we didn’t want to win, but we didn’t look like we did.”

“We must work hard to return to last season’s level because this isn’t us—not Sunderland as we know it.”
