Chelsea captain Reece James will miss roughly three months after knee surgery.
The 26‑year‑old suffered the setback in training ahead of Chelsea’s 5‑1 thrashing of Bournemouth, prompting an immediate decision for surgery.
He has now begun rehab under the club’s medical team, with no definitive return date announced.
Chelsea’s upcoming schedule is tough: a trip to Everton, then home clashes with Tottenham and Manchester United, plus a Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool sandwiched between.
His injury history has been a thorn for the Blues; for my money, James’ recurring setbacks have cost Chelsea more than just points, and they kept him out of several England tournaments since the 2022 World Cup.
Last season saw a marked improvement, allowing him to feature prominently in England’s World Cup run that ended with a semi‑final appearance and a bronze‑medal win.
James withdrew from England duty during the latest international break. The next window opens in early November, when England face Croatia at Wembley.
Manager Xabi Alonso, who has redeployed James as a midfield regular, insists the injury won’t push the club into the January transfer market.
Alonso, 44, believes James will be back before the new year but refuses to set a firm timetable.
He said: “It’s not a two‑ or three‑week fix; it’ll take longer and we’ll see after Christmas. Time will tell.”
“We must handle his rehab properly so he’s fit and confident. It’s a blow for everyone, but the squad must adapt,” he added.
“He stays close, his influence remains strong even off the pitch, and we wish him a swift recovery. Can the Blues maintain momentum without him?”
