Spanish Referees Top UEFA Picks in Nations League

Will Spanish referees continue to dominate UEFA appointments in the upcoming Nations League window? The FIFA window closed on Tuesday, October 6, after kicking off on October 21, with UEFA deploying Spanish officials heavily.

Spanish officials stole the spotlight, handling more matches than any other nation in this UEFA Nations League window. By Tuesday night, October 6, the FIFA international break that began on October 21 wrapped up, delivering 104 games across Europe. The referee committee can rightly boast this dominance. Could this momentum reshape future appointments?

Nine Spanish crews topped the list, outpacing Germany’s eight and Italy’s seven. When you add assistants, VARs and AVARs, Spain’s tally swells to 54 appointments. For my money, that breadth signals unrivaled trust in their officiating standards.

Among the Spaniards, veteran world‑cup referee Alejandro Hernández Hernández featured in two of the opening three fixtures. He oversaw the Netherlands‑Germany clash, a debut for Xavi Hernández and Jürgen Klopp, then the Wales‑Norway match last Thursday. Other officials such as José María Sánchez Martínez, Jesús Gil Manzano, Juan Martínez Munuera, José Luis Munuera Montero and Javier Alberola Rojas also received assignments. Germany follows with eight appointments and a total staff of 54, while Italy trails with seven and 49 officials.

The next referee gathering is set for November 9, when the elite panel reconvenes in Sanxenxo during FIFA’s international break. Top‑tier referees, VARs and the specialized AVAR unit will attend, followed later by the second‑division crew who must pass fitness tests to stay eligible for the premier league.
