Iván Fresneda (22) re‑enters Barça’s radar. In Portugal they say Sporting CP’s right‑back is on the Catalan club’s shortlist, matching his contract extension push that runs until 2028.
The Madrid‑born defender is currently with the senior national team during the international break. Eric García’s setback cleared the path he’d forged from the U‑21s. O Jogo linked his rise to Barça, which first eyed him three years ago while he was at Valladolid. Portuguese sources say no talks have been confirmed.
Barcelona’s sporting department had already listed him when scouting a right‑back in 2023. Back then they were keen on the club’s finances and needed to fill other positions. Meetings took place with Lian Sports Group, the player’s representatives, who presented an offer. The club received solid reports, yet other priorities delayed any deal.
The fee was modest then – a €20 million release clause and Sporting asked for €9 million. Borussia Dortmund showed strong interest but the player ultimately stayed at Sporting CP.
Fresneda was viewed as a prospect yet lacked Champions League experience. In the end Sporting de Portugal secured his services, signing him through 2028 for €9 million plus €3 million in variables and a 10% future‑sale clause for Valladolid. For my money, Barça will benefit from his growth. Will he soon don the Blaugrana shirt?
