Can Panelo revive Once Caldas at Techo Stadium?
The squad faces Internacional de Bogotá this Thursday at 8 p.m., a rescheduled 19th‑round fixture.
Panelo stepped in after Hernán Darío Herrera left, steering a team sitting tenth with 12 points, four shy of eighth place.
He must chase up to 18 points from the remaining 24, with home games against Llaneros, Deportivo Pereira, Águilas and Alianza Valledupar, and away trips to Independiente Medellín, Millonarios, Internacional and Nacional. Twelve of those 27 points are essential for qualification.
Video: Aftermath at Once Caldas – without the former champion, is an interim coach or a permanent boss the way forward?
Samuel Antonio Vanegas joins as assistant, a former central defender who captained the 2003 league‑winning and 2004 Libertadores‑winning Once Caldas. For my money, his leadership could spark the squad.
Since hanging up his boots, “El Capi” has been shaping youngsters at Copa Cabana in Antioquia, earning praise for his guidance and authority.
Alongside Panelo and Vanegas are youth‑team director Mauricio Restrepo; fitness coaches Fabio Castillo and Daniel Felipe Aristizábal; video analyst Saúl Giraldo; doctor Gustavo Vinasco; and goalkeeper coach Yonny Yepez, who arrived last Sunday after Edigson Velásquez’s injury.
