Wiegman Extends Deal to Lead England Women Through Euro 2029

Sarina Wiegman signs contract extension to stay as England women head coach until 2029 | England women's football teamSarina Wiegman has extended her contract to continue as the head coach of England women for Euro 2029.

Wiegman’s new deal locks her in as England women’s head coach through Euro 2029, extending a contract that was set to end after next summer’s World Cup. The move gives her the chance to chase a third straight European title with the Lionesses.

Since taking charge in September 2021, the Dutch tactician has already guided the Netherlands to Euro glory in 2017 and has reached the final of every major tournament she’s entered, twice finishing as World Cup runner‑up.

She says staying with the Lionesses feels like the perfect job in football.

England must navigate a two‑leg playoff against Ukraine to book a spot at the Brazil World Cup in June‑July, and Wiegman admits the tournament dominates her thoughts as she works to unlock the squad’s potential.

For my money, her résumé makes her the obvious choice should Team GB qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. At 57, she’ll stay supported by assistants Janneke Bijl, Arvid Smit and Darren Ward.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham praised her, calling Wiegman “an incredible coach with an unparalleled record in major tournaments” and welcomed the continuity for the next Euro cycle.

Wiegman had dodged questions about her future before England’s fixtures against Greece, yet midfield star Keira Walsh openly voiced her wish for the coach to remain, saying she’d “obviously want her to stay.”

Walsh added, “Sarina runs the show; I’d never question her, and everyone in England wants her to stay.” Will the Lionesses keep building momentum under her leadership?
