Olid, 41, arrived from Hearts this summer, pledging a possession‑heavy, attacking philosophy.
Yet United managed just two shots on target and under 40% possession in each of their first two matches, including a 5‑0 home drubbing by Chelsea.
Few gave them a chance against Arsenal, a pre‑season favourite, especially as the Gunners have struggled to finish cleanly.
Olid admitted the test would be tough, but on Friday she urged her squad to trust themselves, exude confidence, and revert to the solid defensive base built by Marc Skinner.
“It’s been an intense week, emotions ran high among players and staff. Nobody wants a 5‑0 loss,” Olid said.
“We grew as a unit. Bouncing back from a 5‑0 defeat isn’t easy. We talked about needing energy this week and a positive mindset,” she added.
“The focus shifted to defensive shape, aiming to boost their confidence,” Olid explained.
Her ultimate goal remains ball dominance and more chances, yet this night the team delivered defensively – a win in my view.
United looked organized in a balanced first half, with midfielder Simi Awujo standing out and Andrea Medina tracking back efficiently.
They won more duels, made more tackles and recorded more interceptions than Arsenal, even though possession stayed at 40%.
“It looks far better. Awujo’s added running power makes them freer in the final third,” Olid noted.
Arsenal pressed harder in a tense second half, but United held firm until a late goal slipped in seconds before the final whistle.
United had taken the lead midway through the half after Julia Zigiotti capitalized on a mistake by Georgia Stanway.
Smilla Holmberg’s late volley stole the win, yet Olid saw foundations to build upon.
“I believe the attack will arrive. Implementing a new style takes time,” she said.
“That intensity can’t be ignored. We earned three points through hard work and effort,” Olid asserted.
“We must create more chances – that’s why I’m here. Time is needed, but today set the minimum standard. Can United turn this defensive solidity into a potent offense next season?”
