Arsenal Draws 1-1 with Manchester United in WSL Thriller

There are mixed feelings among the home supporters as they head for the exits. Relief mixes with frustration. Another draw dents Arsenal’s title chase, even early in the season. City dropped points only four times last term, so margins matter. Arsenal must find the net soon. United fans, meanwhile, proudly applaud Olid’s side after a markedly better show.

As for Olid, United’s defensive lapses will dull the shine of her first WSL point. Still, there were encouraging signs of progress versus the opening two games.

Slegers has a lot to chew over after that match. Arsenal displayed slick combos, yet before conceding they hesitated, reluctant to press. When defeat loomed they surged, bombarding United’s box and finally breaking through. The mystery: why couldn’t they sustain that pressure earlier?

A patchy display threatened Arsenal’s first loss, but Holmberg rescued them at the death. United, on the other hand, suffered an agonising miss of their maiden win.

More frustration mounts… but wait! Williamson lofts a perfect ball to the far post and Holmberg thumps it home from close range. For my money, Holmberg’s finish shows Arsenal’s late surge can be dangerous. Can Arsenal seize the lead now?

90+1 min Foord and Little scramble for an opening, to no avail. Kelly launches a long shot, only to be blocked.

90 min The scoreboard flashes; six minutes of added time are announced, prompting a hopeful roar from the home crowd.

88 min Little finds Foord, whose cross to the far post is barely cleared for a corner. A scramble erupts, and Tullis‑Joyce eventually gathers.

87 min Medina is substituted for 19‑year‑old Wales international Mared Griffiths.

85 min Tullis‑Joyce makes another vital save! Stanway to Russo, Russo to Kelly, and Kelly fires a long shot that bounces in front of the United keeper but is well‑saved. Medina then cramps, drawing the home crowd’s ire.

84 min So close yet far. Williamson heads the corner, but lacks direction and power.

The ball lands perfectly for Russo, but her close‑range header is blocked on the line by Sandberg. The hosts sigh in frustration.

70 min More Arsenal subs: Baum and Blackstenius replace Caitlin Foord and Selina Cerci as Slegers hunts an equaliser.

We get the opener after a mix‑up between Stanway and Catley. Stanway underhits a pass, Zigiotti nicks it and sends Catley sprawling. She fires a low shot beneath Rodríguez into the net, then wheels away in celebration. A stunned hush falls over the Emirates.

65 min Holmberg and Fox combine on the right; Fox whips in a cross that Le Tissier clears well.

64 min United make another change, swapping Terland for Lea Schüller.

63 min Fox makes a powerful run and wins a corner. It’s cleared but reaches Little, whose cross to the far post sees Russo glance a header wide.

59 min Holmberg continues where Smith left off, dribbling past Sandberg and winning a corner off United’s left‑back. Arsenal play it short; Little’s cross is blocked by Hinata Miyazawa, earning another corner.

The second corner is deep; Russo gathers and plays it back. She can’t find a teammate. Arsenal remain slightly hesitant in decision‑making.
