USMNT Wins 4-2 Over Chile Amid Late‑Match Brawl

USMNT gets into bench-clearing brawl after Chilean player kicks at goalkeeper in closing seconds of friendlyInternational friendlies in late September nearly four full years out from the next World Cup typically leave a lot to be desired, but that was not the case...

Did you expect a calm September friendly? Instead, St. Louis turned into a battlefield as the U.S. hosted Chile.

The game was deadlocked at 1‑1 before a flurry in the second half. Chris Richards broke the tie in the 72nd minute, then 17‑year‑old Mathis Albert added a 93rd‑minute strike to seal a 4‑2 win.

Albert’s stoppage‑time goal seemed like the final headline, but the drama was far from over.

With almost a full minute past the allotted five minutes of added time, USMNT keeper Brian Schwake fell on a loose ball, trying to drain the last seconds.

Chilean forward Leandro Hernandez jogged toward Schwake, nudged the ball, and Richards reacted instantly, sparking a scramble as every player shoved and pushed.

The benches emptied as both squads surged onto the field, even USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino got tangled in the fray. For my money, his presence only fueled the chaos.

“It’s a crazy situation,” Pochettino said after the final whistle. “You try to separate the players and calm them down. Sometimes a winning side sees the opponent lose composure and cross the line.”

Tyler Adams was the most vocal, gesturing toward Chilean players while teammates restrained him as cameras rolled.

After order was finally restored, only Richards and Hernandez received yellow cards.

Albert’s late strike not only clinched the win but also made him the youngest ever scorer for the USMNT. Will this incident shape how the USMNT handles late‑game tensions in future friendlies?
