Christian Pulisic sat out, still recovering from a bone bruise and microfracture suffered in the Belgium loss. Yet other players rose to the occasion against a Canadian side that reached the knockout stage this summer.

Ellis earned his senior call‑up from manager Mauricio Pochettino for friendlies versus Peru, Chile and Mexico before facing Canada. Notably, Uruguay coach Diego Forlán visited him the week before, and Ellis could also represent Uruguay through his mother.

The youngster fit in seamlessly, slotting home a cross from World Cup star Alex Freeman in the 29th minute. It was Ellis’s second friendly strike, following a debut free‑kick goal against Peru.

The concern here is that Ellis could become a cornerstone striker as the USMNT eyes revenge in the 2030 World Cup.

Before toppling Canada, the United States dominated earlier friendlies: a 4-1 win over Peru, a 4-2 triumph over Chile and a 3-0 victory against Mexico, leaving their club‑season players buoyed by Pochettino’s progress.
