Russell admits the 2026 season has stretched his resolve, watching his title hopes evaporate while a year‑long self‑assessment sparked a new driving approach.
He began the year with a win and was tipped as early favourite, yet teammate Kimi Antonelli quickly seized an edge, turning the championship momentum in his direction.
Antonelli’s surge and Russell’s slump left the garage puzzled; the Brit blames a streak of bad luck but also concedes his own form fell short.
Now Russell believes the 2026 cars reward a later throttle lift and early‑corner focus, a style Antonelli mastered, unlike his habit of attacking the mid‑to‑late phase.
“My mindset this year has been a roller‑coaster,” he said. “When the points gap widened early on, my lack of pace kept me awake.”
“I kept asking, how can I extract more performance? What does the car need from me, and vice‑versa?” he explained.
“From 70 points down I clawed back to within 25 after Silverstone, then the gap widened again, Baku shifted the odds, and a grid penalty in Singapore only added salt.”

In my view, his candor reveals a champion still hungry for redemption. “This season just hasn’t been kind, but I’m not bitter. I’ll review what I could’ve improved rather than blame the factors beyond my control.”
“Bad luck has haunted me, yet my own sub‑par performances also tell the truth. That’s the reality.”
Russell says he entered the year confident, relying on the race‑by‑race mindset that earned him GP3 and F2 titles, aiming to boost overall performance.
He adds the championship hasn’t taught him anything new, but the 2026 challenges will ultimately forge a stronger driver.
“I fought for junior titles with a race‑by‑race plan,” he reiterated.
“When my pace faltered earlier, I ignored the title chase and zeroed in on improving my speed.”
“This campaign has tested my character and resilience through tough races, misfortune, and self‑reflection. Do I wallow or bounce back?”
“I believe this will shape me into a better person and racer for the next decade or more.”
Will Russell’s new approach revive his title hopes next season?
