Did the board think I wielded too much sway? Horner hinted that perception drove his 2025 departure as Red Bull F1 team principal.
He steered the squad from its Jaguar roots to two dominant eras – Vettel’s four‑year title run (2010‑13) and Verstappen’s quartet of drivers’ crowns plus three constructors’ trophies (2021‑24).
An internal probe into alleged misconduct cleared his name, yet it ignited a bitter power tussle within Red Bull in 2024.
Key figures like Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley exited as results slipped, and Horner was relieved of his duties in July 2025.
In an exclusive Autosport interview, the veteran shared the factors behind his ouster.
“The company wanted a new direction, or perhaps it was perceived I had too much influence,” Horner said, adding that life after Dietrich’s passing felt markedly different.

Mateschitz hand‑picked Horner to reshape the former Jaguar outfit, forging a close partnership that defined Red Bull’s rise.
For my money, the board’s move signals a new direction for Red Bull. Mateschitz’s October 2022 death is widely seen as the spark that set the internal clash ablaze, with CEO Oliver Mintzlaff’s team seeking tighter control over F1 affairs.
Horner paid heartfelt tribute to the late founder and the trust he placed in him at Red Bull.
“He was Red Bull. Every major decision ran through him; he built the empire alongside the Yoovidhya family,” Horner recalled.
“Dietrich loved racing, the drivers, every motorsport discipline. His imprint is on everything bearing the bull logo today,” he noted.
“People often underestimate his impact; losing a founder creates a void that’s hard to fill. He gave me freedom, believed in me, and I’ll forever be grateful,” he added.
That seismic shift at the top reshaped the organisation and, in Horner’s view, altered his role as team principal.
“After that, committees and corporate layers replaced the founder‑driven agility we were used to,” he observed.
