Chargers hire Western Michigan defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary as new DC

Jim Harbaugh has assembled his new crew of coordinators.

The Los Angeles Chargers have signed Western Michigan defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary to be their new DC, the team announced late Wednesday night.

O’Leary replaces Jesse Minter, who was hired as the new head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. O’Leary previously served under Minter as the Chargers safeties coach in 2024.

At Western Michigan, O’Leary’s defense helped the team to a 10-4 record and its first Mid American Conference championship.

Prior to his previous season with the Bolts, O’Leary spent six years with Norte Dame in various roles.

In O’Leary’s one season with the Chargers, LA boasted the NFL’s No. 1 defense in points allowed. Last year, the Chargers were a top-10 D in points and yards allowed.

Harbaugh no doubt hopes O’Leary can pick up where Minter left off.

O’Leary joins former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, the team’s new offensive coordinator, as Harbaugh’s new top brass with LA looking to take the next step in 2026 after exiting the rotation.
