Bayern warm up for Madrid by breaking the Bundesliga goalscoring record and sealing the title

BAyern Munich warmed up for the visit of Real Madrid by breaking the Bundesliga goalscoring record in a season and taking a big step towards another league title on Saturday.

Leon Goretzka scored Bayern’s 102nd league goal of the season when St. Pauli, who are in danger of relegation, were 5-0 away from home. Bayern opened up a 12-point lead over Borussia Dortmund with five rounds remaining.

Jamal Musiala equaled the record of 101 goals set by the 1971-72 Bayern team with Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller by opening the scoring with a header in the 9th minute and Goretzka broke the record with a shot in the 53rd minute.

Michael Olise made it 103 just a minute later, Nicolas Jackson grabbed Bayern’s fourth goal and Raphaël Guerreiro scored late on to make it 105.

The home crowd’s biggest cheer came when Goretzka had a second goal disallowed after a VAR check for offside before referee Tobias Stieler blew the whistle to end the game.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany fielded a weakened side as he rested a number of players including top scorer Harry Kane and Aleksandar Pavlovi ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final against Madrid. Bayern are defending a 2-1 lead from the first leg in Madrid on Tuesday.
