USMNT loses rising Bundesliga defender Noahkai Banks to Germ

The United States lost a promising Bundesliga defender as 19‑year‑old Noahkai Banks chose Germany, snapping his U‑21 call‑up and crushing Mauricio Pochettino’s recruitment plans.

Germany’s U‑21 boss Antonio Di Salvo announced Banks’ switch on Friday while unveiling his squad for the last three European Championship qualifiers. Born in Honolulu to an American father and German mother, Banks grew up in Germany and will now face Latvia, Malta and Georgia with the German U‑21s.

Pochettino Hoped to Keep Banks in USMNT Pool

Banks rose through the FC Augsburg academy after joining at age 10, climbing every youth level before debuting in the Bundesliga in January 2025 and earning his first start shortly after. The club rewarded him with a contract extension through June 2029 last summer.

Since then his rise has accelerated. He’s become a fixture in Augsburg’s back line, starting all four league games this season, and has logged 35 first‑team appearances with one goal, giving him senior experience that magnified his international choice.

Banks previously wore the United States jersey at U‑17, U‑19 and U‑20 levels, even featuring in the 2023 FIFA U‑17 World Cup. He attended a senior USMNT camp in September 2025 but never left the bench in friendlies versus South Korea and Japan.

Germany Move Must Still Be Formalized

Pochettino never closed the door on him. The defender turned down a March 2026 call‑up while weighing options, and by September the USMNT coach said Banks could not be considered for the latest camp as his allegiance remained undecided.

That uncertainty is now resolved. Di Salvo said Germany had been in talks with Banks for some time and offered a clear long‑term pathway, and the young centre‑back accepted, joining a German U‑21 side that tops its qualifying group with 18 points from seven games.

Because Banks has not featured in a competitive senior match for the United States, he can still switch under FIFA rules, though a one‑time approved change is required. In my view, Germany has secured a future defensive stalwart.
