USWNT’s midfield conundrum persists after Spain setbacks

Will the USWNT finally untangle its midfield after the Spain setbacks?A late US comeback against Spain sparked fresh debate about the team.

If not for a late rally against Spain, the chatter around the US women’s team would have been far harsher.

Facing Spain twice in quick succession, Emma Hayes’ side looked shaky, while the Europeans exuded confidence. Missing Naomi Girma and Sam Coffey hurt the US, and Spain was without Aitana Bonmatí, Mariona Caldentey and Clàudia Pina. For my money, the US can’t afford such gaps if they aim to dominate.

Spain dictated play, leaving America scrambling for chances in the attacking third. The first encounter saw the Spaniards sprint to a 2‑0 lead within 15 minutes and cling to it. Come Tuesday, the US again walked into the break trailing by the same score.
