Head coach Enzo Maresca has answered the backlash over Manchester City‘s celebrations after their victory at Liverpoolby asking: “What do you expect us to do?”

Sunday’s Anfield clash marked City’s first test after an independent commission ruled the club guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations.

Following the 3‑0 triumph, Erling Haaland was visibly moved, his father Alf‑Inge in the crowd, while Maresca celebrated with clenched fists.

“Criticised for what?” Maresca retorted when asked about the media’s doubts over the celebrations.

“We train daily to win. That’s the sole focus on our minds.

Everything else comes from outside, but on the pitch we were ecstatic – you can’t imagine the locker‑room vibe.

He added, “If I’m an Arsenal or United fan and you’re a City supporter, I’d say ‘hey, my friend, you cheat.’ It’s probably tougher for them, yet we were thrilled inside.

Securing three points at Anfield felt priceless, so we celebrated with joy.

Maresca spoke Tuesday at a press briefing ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League tie with defending champions Paris Saint‑Germain. It will be City’s first home game since the guilty verdict, which they have already appealed. For my money, the appeal could clear the air.

Captain Ruben Dias also backed the post‑match revelry at Anfield.

“I stand by the manager’s comments,” the centre‑back said. “Winning at Anfield means everything to us.”

When asked about the verdict, the Portuguese defender replied, “We remain calm and trust the club.”

Pep Guardiola, who amassed 20 trophies in a decade before stepping down last season, is set to return to the Etihad for the fixture.

“This has been his home for ten years, given all he achieved here,” Maresca noted. “It excites everyone, especially the fans.”

It remains unclear whether Guardiola will address supporters or former players before kickoff.

The Spaniard posted on social media after his former side were found guilty of financial breaches.

“I want every Manchester City fan worldwide to know I’m here, now more than ever,” he wrote.

“Let me be clear: we’ll get through this together,” he added. Will the club emerge stronger after the appeal?
