Two-time MVP Stephen Curry has agreed to a new deal, the Warriors announced on Twitter.
“We’re thrilled to lock in Stephen and extend his legendary run with Golden State,” GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. said. “Never has a franchise had a brighter on‑court and off‑court face than Stephen Curry with the Warriors.”
“He personifies everything we stand for—stellar play, distinctive leadership, community impact. After 17 years of his artistry, we’re excited fans will keep watching new chapters unfold,” the team added.
ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported that Curry secured a two‑year, $116 million contract with a player option for 2028‑29. That’s $20.7 million below the $136.7 million max he could have taken and $1 million more than the two‑year, $115 million extension Kawhi Leonard signed with Toronto earlier this week.
The 12‑time All‑Star will earn $62.6 million this season and $55.7 million in 2027‑28, the first year of the new pact. Even with that guarantee, the Warriors could carve out notable cap space next summer, according to Yossi Gozlan of CapSheets.com. For my money, that flexibility could reshape the roster.
Because of the deal, Curry will likely face a six‑month trade ban, Gozlan noted on Twitter, meaning he stays a Warrior past the February deadline—though his roster spot was never in doubt.
Curry became eligible on Aug 29 to sign an extension. Recent reports said Golden State was ready to meet any one‑ or two‑year offer the 38‑year‑old wanted. The Over‑38 rule limited him to a two‑year pact.
We’re in a very interesting situation, Curry told ESPN two days ago. I want to be on a competitive team and have some flexibility; we haven’t had that in years, he added.
This team needs flexibility to act if needed. Information and patience are key. It’s a unique scenario given the last four years, my career stage, this year’s roster and our hunger to win, Curry explained.
The contract lands just days before Monday’s media day, with Golden State’s training camp opening Tuesday in Hawai‘i. ESPN’s Anthony Slater had predicted a resolution before camp.
Despite a runner’s knee limiting him to 43 regular‑season games last year, Curry still posted 26.6 points, 4.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals while shooting .468/.393/.912 in 30.9 minutes per game.
The four‑time champion holds NBA marks for total threes made, threes per game and attempts per game, and his .912 free‑throw percentage tops league history.
That extension makes Curry the first NBA player to exceed $600 million in on‑court earnings, per ESPN’s Bobby Marks. Kevin Durant and LeBron James sit just shy of that mark. Will his earnings spark a new salary era?
