The People’s Republic of China regained its position as the world’s top badminton nation to win the men’s and women’s titles 2024 BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals in Chengdu on Sunday (May 5).

The hosts beat Indonesia in the final, marking the first time since 2012 that China has won both the men’s and women’s titles at the World Team Championships.

In the Thomas Cup, the Chinese denied Indonesia – the most successful nation in the tournament’s history – their 15th.i.e title to capture their 11i.e in the process.

World number two Shi Yuqi set the pace for victory over China Anthony Ginting in straight games (21-17, 21-6) in the opening rubber. The first men’s doubles match was intense, with momentum swinging back and forth between China. Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang and Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto.

Weikeng and Wang narrowly won the first game 21-18 and fought back from 4-10 down. The Indonesian pair claimed the second (21-17) to force a third set where they took an 8-4 lead.

Unforced errors proved costly as they let the Chinese back into the contest which saw them take the lead for only the second time in the match at 18-17. Lian and Wang had five straight points to win the match and the match.

Top shuttle Jonathan Christie gave Indonesia some hope of keeping their Thomas Cup title hopes alive after defeating Li Shi Feng in the second singles match.

Christie started the clash strongly, winning the opening game 21-16 before Li found himself in the second and came close to winning the third game as the decider. The Indonesian ace squandered an early 6-2 lead in the second to see Li move up six points. Li held the lead to tie the score.

Christie, the reigning All England Open men’s singles champion, had a slight edge over his Chinese counterpart with a six-point lead late in the match. Li again showed his never-say-die attitude to get back within two.

But Christie prevailed to clinch the match and give Indonesia a fighting chance heading into the second doubles match.

He Jiting and Ren Xiangyu returned the championship in doubles with a great 21-11, 21-15 victory Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana to secure the Thomas Cup crown.

Uber Cup: China wins unprecedented 16th title

China repeated their dominance in the Women’s Uber Cup, winning an unprecedented 16i.e title by steamrolling Indonesia 3-0 in Sunday’s final.

Indonesia already made history by reaching the finals for the first time since 2008 in a repeat of the final 16 years ago.

The final saw a similar result with China winning the title in the first three games to atone for their defeat to Republic of Korea in the last edition.

Reigning Olympic champion Chen Yufei put the hosts in front and made a short assault on Gregoria Mariska Tunjung 21-7, 21-16 in the opening rubber.

Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan were in equally devastating form to sweep past Lanny Tria Mayasari and Rachel Allesya Rose by 21-11, 21-8 for a 2-0 advantage at second singles.

The third rubber was a nail-biter for the 18-year-old Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo to fight the two-time world bronze medalist He Bingjiao.

Wardoyo took a surprise lead in the contest, winning the opening game 21-10 before the seasoned campaigner won the second to send the match into the third game. The Indonesian shuttler did so in a close contest in the third game as He prevailed to take the match and give China the title.
