Texans rookie DT Kayden McDonald: Rookie of the Year, Super Bowl 'are realistic for me'

Surprisingly the third defensive tackle off the board after Caleb Banks to the Minnesota Vikings and Peter Woods to the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round, McDonald is very happy he landed in Houston.

“The Texans, they made it clear who the best defensive tackle was,” McDonald said. “It’s a blessing to be here. I’m ready for the opportunity.”

That opportunity will likely come in the form of McDonald finding representation in the mix with current starters Sheldon Rankins and Tommy Togiai between star pass rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter.

“It’s going to be tough to challenge us,” said McDonald, who heads a defense that ranked sixth in the NFL in yards allowed. “We have already brought the works to the defense. If I add myself, it will be special.”

As a result, Anderson was the last Texan to win AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors when he was named an honoree in 2023. He was the third Houston DROTY behind current head coach DeMeco Ryans (2006) and Brian Cushing (2009). However, an interior defensive lineman hasn’t won the hardware since Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams in 2015.

McDonald comes to Houston with championship experience, a decorated individual resume and the confidence to make 2026 a memorable debut for himself and the season for the Texans.

“All who went before me [in the draft]that’s what fuels me,” McDonald said. “There’s not one player better than me in this class. I’m going to show it.”

Championship Sunday is a destination the Houston Texans have yet to reach in franchise history. The current stable has lost in the league competition three seasons in a row.

Their newest defensive tackle is trying to change that in a rookie season he’s looking to make memorable on more accounts.

Houston, we have a rookie with high expectations.

“We all have energy and enthusiasm,” McDonald said. “It’s a great opportunity. At the end of the day, we want to get to LA and win the Super Bowl.”
