Philip Rivers signs with Colts practice squad, retires at age 44

Philip Rivers is on the verge of an NFL comeback.

The Indianapolis Colts are adding the 44-year-old quarterback to their practice squad, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo reported Tuesday.

Rivers’ stunning signing comes after training with the club on Monday night. Rivers played from 2004 to 2020, spending 16 seasons with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers before playing his final season with the Colts in 2020.

The deal comes after Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles in Sunday’s loss to the Jaguars. Backup QB Riley Leonard is also dealing with a Grade 1 PCL sprain suffered while relieving Jones on Sunday, and his status for Week 15 is uncertain, according to Rapoport.

Rivers is currently a semifinalist in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026 – his first year of HOF eligibility. If Rivers signs with the Colts’ 53-man active roster, his clock for HOF eligibility would reset to five years.

Around The NFL will have more on this news soon.
