Saints cut Daniel Carlson, claim RB Audric Estime

Saints release Daniel Carlson, claim Audric Estime off waiversAn offensive player is returning to New Orleans. But to make it happen, the Saints have moved on from their kicker.

A skill player is heading back to New Orleans.

To pull it off, New Orleans ditched its kicker.

On Tuesday the Saints said they cut Daniel Carlson and claimed running back Audric Estime off waivers.

The Browns released Estime on Monday.

In his debut season with the Saints, Carlson connected on just 8 of 12 field‑goal attempts over seven games. All four misses were from 50 yards or more, including a 52‑yard miss in the fourth quarter of the Week 7 loss to the Steelers in Paris. For my money, those long kicks sealed his fate.

Irish kicker Charlie Smyth, who saw action in six games for New Orleans last season, remains on the practice squad.

Estime had been with the Saints since midway through last season before being waived in September with an injury settlement. He joined the Vikings’ practice squad and then was signed to the Browns’ 53-man roster last month. He appeared in one game for Cleveland, taking nine carries for 19 yards with a touchdown in the team’s Oct. 18 win over the Ravens. Will Estime become a key weapon for the Saints this season?
