MLS teens Justin Ellis and Julian Hall found the net, Dortmund’s 17‑year‑old Mathis Albert earned a penalty that Malik Tillman converted, and Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan debuted at 16 years, 363 days, becoming the fourth‑youngest USMNT player in modern times.
The night belonged to Ellis, the Orlando City academy product who opened the scoring with a clever header at his home ground, where the national side now boasts an 8‑0‑0 record.
‘It’s the stuff I’ve dreamed of since I was five,’ Ellis told TNT’s Melissa Ortiz. ‘I’ve imagined this moment thousands of times, and it finally happened. I can’t even describe it.’

Like teammate Alex Freeman, now with Villarreal after a winter move, Ellis hails from South Florida, rose through Orlando’s academy after leaving Inter Miami, and relished another milestone in his breakout 2026 campaign.
‘My family and close friends are here, even in tough times,’ Ellis said. ‘Scoring for the club that gave me everything is unbelievable; I can’t put it into words.’
Pochettino started Ellis, Sullivan and New England’s Peyton Miller, fielding an XI with a 23.5‑year average and handing debuts to 11 newcomers—proof that his talk of a new era isn’t empty.

Pochettino later credited MLS clubs, not his staff, for nurturing the talent, noting that all but one of the 13 newcomers either play or trained in MLS.
‘Credit belongs to MLS coaches and staffs,’ the Argentine coach said. ‘Their understanding and quick tactical adaptation give them the edge.’
‘It’s vital to applaud MLS coaches,’ he added. ‘From day one the youngsters grasped every concept we presented and applied it immediately.’

Sullivan didn’t score but pressured Peru’s backline, linked well on the right flank, created two chances and completed 89 % of his passes in 62 minutes, adding another highlight to his rising career.
‘It’s a pinch‑me moment,’ Sullivan told TNT after the final whistle. ‘My whole childhood led to this, and representing my country is an immense honor.’

Pochettino expressed satisfaction with his young attacker.

Even the veterans showed the value of fresh blood. Former Vancouver Whitecaps player Sebastian Berhalter, who debuted for the USMNT a year before his World Cup impact, came off the bench to deliver a pinpoint cross for Hall’s finish and a thunderous golazo of his own.
The Yanks will head back to the Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center near Atlanta for a few more preparation days before meeting Chile at St. Louis CITY SC’s Energizer Park on Tuesday night.
