Ryan Jeffers Weighs Twins Stay, Eyes Free Agency

Ryan Jeffers considering staying with Twins or testing free agencyCatcher Ryan Jeffers, a 2018 second‑round pick, may be nearing his exit from Minnesota.

Could Jeffers stay in Minnesota? The catcher, drafted in the second round in 2018, may soon test free agency even though he’s open to remaining with the Twins.

Among this year’s thin free‑agent pool, Jeffers stands out as a premier catcher and a potent bat. The right‑handed hitter has posted a 119 wRC+ over 1,632 plate appearances since his breakout 2023 season, ranking eighth among his peers.

A hamate fracture in mid‑May sidelined him for two months, capping his year at 92 games. Still, the 29‑year‑old posted a .256/.353/.461 line with 14 homers and career‑best strikeout (17.9%) and walk (12.5%) rates in 368 PA. His 128 wRC+ shows he was 28% better than the average hitter, a notable feat for a catcher, while the positional average sits at 91 wRC+.

Defensively, Jeffers lags behind his offensive output. In 2026 he threw out just 10.6% of steal attempts (league 22.7%) and ranked 37th percentile in framing. Blocking was modestly better at the 51st percentile, and he posted a solid 12th‑place finish among 107 catchers in Overturns Vs. Expected (9.5).

The Twins must decide whether to extend a $23.1 million qualifying offer before the five‑day post‑World Series deadline. For my money, the offer is too low given his market value. Rejecting it would grant Minnesota draft compensation—a pick after the first round if he signs for over $50 million, or a second‑rounder for a smaller deal. A three‑ or four‑year contract at $15 million‑plus per season could push his total past the $50 million threshold.

If Jeffers departs, veteran Victor Caratini likely becomes the 2027 starter, while top prospect Vahn Lackey remains a few years away. The club could chase a cheaper free agent or trade for a partner for Caratini. Options include Tyler Stephenson, Austin Hedges, Jonah Heim, James McCann or former Twin Christian Vázquez. How will Minnesota reshape its catching corps?
