Matt LaFleur, Packers agree to multi-year contract extension

Matt LaFleur, Packers agree to multi-year contract extension

The way Green Bay’s season ended raised some questions about whether new CEO Ed Policy would be steadfast in his relationship with LaFleur. The Packers squandered a 21-3 halftime lead in the Wild Card round and fell to Chicago 31-27. Green Bay had been 115-1 since 2000 when he led the way with 18-plus points per game, including playoffs.

Lost leads marked LaFleur’s seventh season in Green Bay. The Packers became the first team since the 1970 merger to lose three deficits when they led by 10-plus points in the final five minutes of a game, including playoffs – Week 3 to Cleveland, Week 16 and Wild Card round to Chicago.

An injury-plagued team that included losing star Micah Parsons for the season to a torn ACL in Week 15, the Packers ended their 2025 campaign with five straight losses.

Despite the sad ending, Policy and the Packers will have LaFleur coach them out of the disappointment.

Green Bay has a 76-40-1 record with LaFleur at the helm and has made the postseason in six of seven seasons. The Packers have not reached the Super Bowl under the coach and have not been to the NFC Championship game since 2020, his second season at the helm. LaFleur has a 3-6 playoff record with back-to-back one-and-done campaigns. Over the past four seasons, the Packers have gone 37-30-1 in the regular season and 1-3 in the playoffs.

The latest playoff failure didn’t change Green Bay’s decision to lock LaFleur up long-term. The 46-year-old would have been a top candidate for other open jobs if the Packers had moved on. Those teams will have to look elsewhere now.
