Did Villa really plan to sue over podcast jabs? On Friday the club announced it would pursue legal action against former England defender Jamie Carragher for what it called “unacceptable insults” on the Stick to Football show.
The ex‑Liverpool star had suggested manager Unai Emery could replace Michael Carrick at Manchester United and told critics to shut up.
Carragher issued an apology on Saturday, calling his wording clumsy and wrong, and insisted his remarks were meant in jest.
Villa never filed the lawsuit, and after the apology they dropped the threat entirely.
He also hinted Emery still craves a ‘giant’ club, recalling his previous stints at Paris Saint‑Germain and Arsenal. In my view, that suggestion is pure speculation.
‘There’s a chain in football, whether you like it or not,’ Carragher said.
‘Real Madrid will poach Manchester United’s top talent, as they did with Cristiano Ronaldo. Lower‑league sides like Aston Villa will see their players or coaches taken away.’
‘Aston Villa will never become Manchester United.’
On Saturday Carragher posted a retraction on social media.
‘I’d like to apologise to Aston Villa, its owners and fans,’ the pundit wrote.
‘My language this week was clumsy and wrong.’
‘I assure Villa supporters it was tongue‑in‑cheek, but I understand it didn’t read that way, so I’m sorry.’ Will Villa’s choice to abandon the claim calm future pundit clashes?
