Riolo says Marseille moves from critique to pity

Riolo warns Marseille may slip further unless they rally soon?Marseille fell 1-0 to Olympiacos, exposing their limits on Europa League Day 2.

The Olympiacos edged Marseille 1-0 on Thursday in Europa League Matchday 2, prompting Daniel Riolo on RMC’s After Foot to say he felt sorry for the club.

Marseille still can’t find form. After a 2-0 Ligue 1 win over Troyes on Sunday, the side fell to Olympiacos 1-0 on Thursday, handing Bruno Genesio his sixth loss in eight games.

Against the Greek side, Marseille showed flashes of promise, yet a trimmed squad from this summer’s austerity measures showed its limits. Riolo told After Foot, “I’m moving from criticizing Marseille to feeling pity. It’s hopeless, I’m at a loss for words.”

Riolo admitted, “I’m starting to feel sorry.”

In my opinion, the squad’s lack of fight is disgraceful. Riolo said, “After a narrow win at Troyes, losing to a non‑top European side like Olympiacos is unacceptable. They keep walking off with heads down.”

Walid Acherchour echoed the sentiment, saying Marseille shouldn’t lose this match but did against an inferior Olympiacos. He warned that mental fragility could breed indifference in the weeks ahead.

Thursday night saw Marseille leave the Vélodrome to a once‑tolerant crowd whose patience is now wearing thin. The team returns home in ten days versus Le Havre, with away trips to Angers (Sunday 15:00) and Sturm Graz (next Thursday 18:45) in between.
