Spain’s women’s national team meets the United States in Washington this Saturday at 20:30 on Teledeporte. Two of the world’s elite squads will clash, kicking off a two‑match series that resumes early Tuesday‑Wednesday at 01:00. Can they seize the edge?
We’ve progressed enormously at club level and among regional federations. Youth tiers in Spain boast a high standard. Now we get to watch the two top nations twice, and I hope we enjoy it,” said coach Sonia Bermúdez. “Although it’s a friendly, we approach it with full ambition. The setting differs from official competition, that’s clear. We have two games to test models and rotate players, yet I’m convinced neither side treats this as a mere friendly – we’ll go for victory.”
For Bermúdez, who once played in the United States, the match feels special: “I was lucky to join Western New York Flash in 2014. It was an amazing experience, though the style was far more physical and transition‑focused than in Spain. Facing the US as a coach is thrilling, and I expect great games that will sharpen us for the World Cup.”
Looking ahead to the World Cup in Brazil in 2027, the coach noted the Americans will be among the favourites: “There are many strong sides and the United States is certainly one of them. A tournament is tough to win; a bad day can end it. It tests you daily, and I wouldn’t rule out any team for the finals.”
The goalkeeping debate – will Spain find the right keeper?
Without injured Cata Coll, Misa, Nanclares and Eunate will compete for the goalkeeper spot and Bermúdez hasn’t confirmed the starter yet, though she hinted all three could see minutes soon: “They’re in perfect condition. We’ll decide between today and tomorrow who starts this first match, but the good news is each offers full guarantees and we have two fixtures ahead.” In my view, this depth gives Spain a clear edge.
