Vasco da Gama Fires Up Pre‑Match Ahead of Boca Clash

The semi‑final tie between Boca Juniors and Vasco da Gama still hangs on a crucial venue question. While officials scramble, the Brazilian side has already turned up the heat. Coach Pedro Emanuel slammed one of the proposed sites, and Santiago Sosa confessed he dreams of scoring against the “Xeneize.” Will the venue finally be settled?

With less than a week left, Estádio São Januário remains out because it fails to meet the minimum capacity required for a semi‑final. The Maracanã has been the front‑runner, yet its uncertainty has opened the door for another ground: Botafogo’s Estádio Nilton Santos.

That option didn’t sit well with Vasco. After beating Botafogo in the Brasileirão, Pedro Emanuel blasted the idea of playing Boca on artificial turf. “I’m a football lover used to historic clashes in iconic arenas. With all due respect to Nilton Santos, a synthetic surface is a clear disadvantage,” the coach warned.

The manager believes a match of this magnitude deserves a stage that reflects both clubs’ heritage and the stakes of a Copa Sudamericana semi. He therefore outlined his two preferred venues for hosting Boca.

In Emanuel’s view, only two stadiums merit the occasion: the legendary Maracanã and the club’s own São Januário. “The Maracanã, for its global prestige, and São Januário, our home, are the right settings. A Vasco‑Boca showdown in Rio loses its gravitas outside those two venues,” he asserted.

Santiago Sosa also shared his thoughts ahead of the Boca clash while at Vasco da Gama.

Sosa wasn’t the only voice from the “Gigante da Colina”. The midfielder, a product of River Plate and fresh from Racing, spoke after his side’s Brazilian league win, admitting he harbors a special hope for the Argentine showdown.

He came close to scoring in the latest game but missed, so his focus now zeroes in on Boca. “I was near the net today and it didn’t happen. I hope to find the back of the net against Boca – that would be something special,” Sosa said, adding another layer to the venue debate.

Why Vasco can’t secure the Maracanã

The main hurdle for using the Maracanã lies in the calendar clash with two other Rio giants. Flamengo and Fluminense will host their Libertadores semi‑finals there, prompting both clubs to reject Vasco’s request. The public prosecutor’s recommendation to release the stadium has yet to sway them.

Consequently, the Maracanã, once the top choice, now sits in limbo. As official confirmation stalls, Nilton Santos gains traction as an alternative, a prospect that Pedro Emanuel opposes due to the pitch conditions.
