The ‘Millonario’ sits eight points shy of the annual table qualifiers and must finish nearly flawless. A Clausura title or freed‑up slots could still rescue them.
Quick recap
A loss to Huracán has River’s Libertadores dream hanging by a thread, leaving coach Leonardo Ponzio with barely any wiggle room in the final six games.
With matchday 11 of the Clausura nearly done, River sits tenth on the annual table, tallying 42 points from 26 fixtures, and still owes a game against Sarmiento.
They trail the qualifying spots by eight points, with seven clubs ahead, and flirt with the cutoff for a Sudamericana place.
What River needs to secure a Libertadores berth
Given Argentinos Juniors needed 57 points last season, River must harvest at least 15 of the 18 points left – essentially five wins out of six. For my money, that’s a daunting but doable sprint.
Success also hinges on rivals dropping points, especially Argentinos Juniors, Boca, Vélez and Independiente Rivadavia.
The remaining schedule is tough: home to Estudiantes de Río Cuarto and Racing, plus away trips to Sarmiento (postponed), Belgrano, Boca and Aldosivi.
Winning the Clausura would hand River a direct Libertadores ticket. Currently ninth in Zone B and outside the playoffs, a victory in the pending match would temporarily lift them into the qualifying bracket.
Another route appears if higher‑placed teams free up spots by clinching the Clausura, the Copa Argentina or the Sudamericana.
Three straight wins over Banfield, Independiente Rivadavia and Atlético Tucumán raised hopes, but the defeat by Huracán reignited alarm bells. Six make‑or‑break fixtures now loom.
