Phillip Tietz’s first‑half strike, his fifth in six Bundesliga games, extended Mainz’s away winning run as Schalke stay winless.
Phillip Tietz opened the scoring in the first half, his fifth league goal in six matches, pushing Mainz to keep their away winning streak while Schalke remained scoreless at the Veltins‑Arena this season.
Schalke, coming into this game after defeat in Freiburg, had gone two home games this season without scoring, both of them goalless draws against Bayern Munich and Elversberg.
Mainz, meanwhile, had won both of their away fixtures so far this term, scoring nine goals in the process and extending an unbeaten run on the road to eight Bundesliga matches.

Karius denies Mainz twice in the opening minute
The visitors sparked early drama at the packed Veltins‑Arena when, inside the first minute, Jaesung Lee threaded a pass to Sheraldo Becker, only for Loris Karius to smother the near‑post attempt. Lee’s follow‑up was equally thwarted as Karius produced a brilliant double save.
Schalke gradually found rhythm, yet Adrian Gantenbein blasted over from the edge after 16 minutes, and four minutes later Stefan Posch denied a left‑footed effort.

Tietz breaks the deadlock
The breakthrough came in the 24th minute when Anthony Caci whipped a cross from the right; Tietz out‑muscled Nikola Katić and nudged the ball past Karius to make it 1‑0. For my money, that finish proved his growing clutch instinct.
Becker rattled the net again at 35 minutes, forcing another fine Karius save, while Nadiem Amiri and Kaishu Sano each earned bookings for late fouls on Satoshi Tanaka in the 42nd and 45th minutes, leaving the half at 1‑0 to Mainz.
