If there’s one thing the Bundesliga hasn’t been short of so far this season, it is goals. The most recent matchday delivered another flurry, with plenty of drama, shocks and stunning individual displays to match.
Matchday 5 provided another 35 goals, with RB Leipzig’s emphatic 6-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen’s thrilling 4-3 win against Mainz among the standout results.
Such has been the volume of goals scored since the opening weekend of the season, that a long-standing record has – finally – been broken.

In the 2026/27 season, the opening five rounds have produced 172 goals, eclipsing every previous five‑matchday tally in Bundesliga history.
That haul tops the old mark of 170 from 1984/85, as 45 games yield a jaw‑dropping 3.82 goals on average. For my money, this surge signals a new offensive era.
The 3.82 average still leads Europe’s big five, leaving La Liga second at 3.04 after 69 matches (as of 12 October). Will other leagues catch up as the season unfolds?

Bayern Munich have led the charge with 16 strikes, closely followed by Leipzig on 15, while Leverkusen and Freiburg have each found the net 14 times to date. Leverkusen have also provided the league’s top individual scorer this term in striker Patrik Schick, who has five in five games. The likes of Michael Olise, Christopher Nkunku and Niclas Füllkrug are all just one goal behind.
And with the Bundesliga currently averaging more goals per game than the record 3.58 achieved across the entirety of the 1983/84 season, the 2026/27 campaign could yet go down as the most prolific in the competition’s history.
If the opening five matchdays are anything to go by, there’s plenty more entertainment to come in the months ahead.
