Borussia Mönchengladbach remain the only team yet to register a single Bundesliga point in 2026/27 and sit bottom of the table after five games.
Borussia Mönchengladbach sit alone at the foot of the 2026/27 table, zero points after five matches. Their flop ranks among the league’s worst openings and leaves their survival hopes hanging by a thread.

“We had a similar situation last season and we’d all hoped not to be there again,” said Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder in September after dismissing Eugen Polanski in the wake of four straight defeats. “The current situation isn’t good.”
Alexander Blessin was brought in to turn things around after the international break, but started his reign with a derby defeat at Cologne to leave the Foals without a win by Matchday 5 for the second season running and the seventh time in their Bundesliga history. Only once before (in 2015/16) had they lost their opening five league matches.

Zero points after five games isn’t unheard of in Germany. In 64 seasons, 15 clubs have found themselves point‑less at that stage, and more than 50 have failed to win.
Nuremberg endured the longest drought, finally winning on Matchday 18 in 2013/14.

The record for fewest wins over an entire Bundesliga season stands at two, set by Tasmania Berlin in 1965/66 and matched by Wuppertal in 1974/75.
As you’ll see in the list below, the former also hold the unwanted distinction of playing the worst season in Bundesliga history, amassing only 10 points.

Gladbach’s current woes are still early. Both the 2025/26 and 2015/16 squads survived after winless starts, as did the 1990/91 and 1991/92 sides.
History shows a bottom‑place slot after Matchday 5 rarely seals fate. Since 1963/64, only 22 of those teams have been relegated, and in the last 26 years just 12 fell.
In 2015/16 the Foals staged the league’s best comeback, leaping from zero points after five games to fourth place and a Champions League berth. In my view, that revival was truly extraordinary.
Changing the coach is a common reaction. Exactly half of the clubs (32 of 64) that sat bottom after Matchday 5 switched managers during the season.
