Michele Kang: Lionesses’ new hub will outshine men’s facilit

Michele Kang on London City Lionesses’ new training ground setting a women's football standardMichele Kang says the Lionesses’ new training hub will set a higher benchmark than most men’s facilities.

Kang says the Lionesses’ upcoming training complex will raise the bar for women’s football, eclipsing most men’s Premier League facilities.

During the summer, Kang pumped cash into the WSL side, snapping up star Alexia Putellas, a two‑time Ballon d’Or winner.

She explained, “We’re creating a cutting‑edge training centre built solely for our female athletes, set to open in under a year.”

Her architect, who’s delivered several Premier League hubs, warned that once completed, the Lionesses’ centre will outclass most men’s training sites.

In my view, pouring money into infrastructure is essential to end the double standard that still separates female players from their male peers.

How can anyone accept that your daughters, sisters, or friends are treated as second‑class citizens while boys play as if it’s their birthright?

She argues women have long been forced into the role of “small men.”

“We must look after our female athletes so they can train, perform and thrive as women, not as miniature men,” she said.

You drop your son at a world‑class centre, yet your daughter ends up elsewhere.

Kang champions independent women’s clubs, a key factor that drew her to London City Lionesses.

“My first foray into women’s football was with Washington Spirit in the U.S., where two‑thirds of teams operate independently of men’s clubs. That feels far more normal to me.”

“I wanted to prove there isn’t just one path – a women’s side needn’t be tethered to a men’s team. London City and Durham, I believe, are the only women‑only clubs left.”

“Building a women‑only organization shows what’s achievable when every resource is devoted solely to the female game.” What will other clubs learn from this bold experiment?
