Has every “wonderkid” lived up to the buzz? Donovan says not a chance, having watched countless U.S. prospects fade.
Donovan admires Sullivan’s talent, yet he refuses to jump on the hype train.
During a Unfiltered Soccer fan Q&A with Tim Howard, Donovan outlined his cautious outlook.
Why does Donovan temper his enthusiasm for Cavan Sullivan?
“I stay measured because, unlike many new fans, I’ve seen this story repeat,” he said.
He cites Freddy Adu, Santino Quaranta, Eddie Johnson and Gio Reyna as cautionary cases.
“Christian was unique – a superstar who became a superstar,” Donovan noted of Pulisic.
Will Sullivan prove his grit when the USMNT calls on him next season?
Donovan isn’t doubting Sullivan’s ability; he’s actually impressed. In my view, his restraint is wise.
“That’s why I’m excited about Cavan,” he added, highlighting the youngster’s edge over mere stats.
“He’s gritty, competitive and hungry for victory,” Donovan emphasized.
For Donovan, that mindset matters more than raw potential. The real test will be delivering when the USMNT counts on him. Time will decide.
