Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans has no plans to replace the offensive coordinator, even as the Nick Caley-led offense continues to falter.
“We’re pushing forward with everybody we’ve got,” Ryans said Tuesday, via ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime . “We are all in this together.
Ryans changed offensive coordinators in the offseason, firing Bobby Slowik and hiring Caley in hopes of reviving a group that was predictable and ineffective in CJ Stroud’s second season. If anything, the offense has taken a step backwards under Caley.
The operation, through seven weeks, has been clueless, not giving Stroud easy answers and unable to consistently keep drives alive. When the Texans face a defense that is good at stopping the run, the product falls apart. Monday night’s horrendous short calls, where Caley insisted on calling, running into the teeth of the defense even as his offensive line was repeatedly blowing the ball away, suggested the offensive coordinator was struggling to adjust.
As the heat burns in Houston, Ryans is shielding Caley from the flames.
“It all starts with me,” Ryans said. “So you want to point the finger at somebody, put it on me. It’s my job, and ultimately it’s up to me to fix it. That’s the way it’s going to be, but we’re going to stick with what we’ve got and we’ve just got to do better. Gonna coach you better. We’ve got to play better. We’ve got to execute better on game day, and it looks like it’s going to be a bad day. We’re one possession away from getting that game.”
The Texans have averaged 21.2 points per game (21st in the NFL) and 304.3 total YPG (23rd) in 2025. They have converted 30.7 percent of third downs, 31st in the league, behind only the Tennessee Titans. Houston has scored 19 points or fewer in four of six games and been held to 10 or fewer twice.
Against any defense with a pulse, Stroud has struggled. The third-year QB had an 81.8 completion percentage, 6 pass TDs and 0 INTs in Weeks 4-5 against the Titans and Ravens but has a 58.0 completion percentage, 3 pass TDs and 4 INTs in his other 4 games — Ravens allowing 32.3 PPG (32nd) 27.PG PPG (32nd)
The offensive woes have amplified Houston’s problems, leaving the team with no running game to speak of and Stroud under a lot of fire. But this headache doesn’t completely go away during the season. It is the role of the coaches to help overcome any of these shortcomings. So far, Caley – and Ryans – have failed on this front for seven weeks.
