“It was good, it was good to get there,” Metchie said. “It was good to play against someone else. It’s a more process of things rather than just one day, not just, of course on Gameday, but it’s more process than how you meet every day, how stable you can be.”
Selected in the second round 2022 missed the entire newcomer period after being diagnosed with leukemia. Since being cleaned to return before the 2023 campaign, the former Alabamba product has not been able to separate itself in Houston. In 29 games in the career he has 40 catches in 412 meters and one touch.
The draft of the Texans of Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, while trade with Christian Kirk and signed Justin Watson, pushed Metchie further down the depth. “You talk about that competition in the room, but everyone likes each other, everyone wants to get better, everyone just helps each other.”
Metchie’s versatility to play both slots and outside increases the likelihood of making the roster and possibly carving out roles. Saturday he played 19 snapshots out and 12 in the slot.
