Mayfield injured his left shoulder in the Buccaneers’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday night, spending the second half in a sling while watching from the sidelines. There were valid concerns that he might miss time when the week started, but after receiving positive MRI results and going cautiously through most of the week of practice, Mayfield appears to have improved enough to be optimistic.
“He had to get good,” Bowles said, via the team’s official site. “He was very limited on Wednesday, he did a bit more yesterday and he moved perfectly today, so he’s fine.”
Bowles’ summary is great news for Bucs fans who feared their team’s injury woes could finally sink their ship with Mayfield’s uncertain prospects. As the heart and engine of the team, Mayfield is arguably the most important player on the Buccaneers’ roster, and the prospect of taking the field with 33-year-old backup Teddy Bridgewater seemed daunting, if not doomed.
Instead, it appears Bucs fans can brace themselves for another Sunday with the No. 6 under center.
