Lombardi was fired after Denver’s 10-7 loss in the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots. So the decision is likely to spark speculation about whether it was scapegoating Lombardi for a playoff stumble or making room for Webb to not lose his rising coaching talent.
A third-round pick of the New York Giants in 2017, Webb spent time as a quarterback with Big Blue, the New York Jets and the Bills.
Webb joined the Broncos staff in 2023, lending Payton a helping hand and turning the franchise into a playoff team each of the past two seasons. Perhaps most importantly, he has overseen the development of QB Bo Nix’s first two NFL seasons.
Over the past three seasons, the Broncos offense has improved year after year.
When Payton took over a Broncos team that was dead last in the NFL in scoring in 2022, the 2023 Denver team was 19th in scoring and 26th in yards. Those numbers rose to 10th and 19th, respectively, in 2024, and 14th and 10th last season.
So far, everything has been going smoothly in Denver. Payton is hoping for more of the same as Webb continues to climb the coaching ladder.
