His father played football. He plays football.
Alex Freeman, son of former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Antonio Freeman, scored a first-half goal in the United States’ 2-0 World Cup victory over Australia on Friday.
Mark Freeman, who extended the Red, White and Blue’s lead shortly before half-time, was initially wrongly adjudged. However, video review showed he was level with the Socceroos’ back line when team-mate Sergiño Dest fired from the top of the box, which slipped off a defender before Freeman followed up and headed the ball home.
Freeman, 21, now has three goals at the national level and also had an assist in the U.S. men’s national team’s opening win over Paraguay.
His father, Antonio, played eight of his nine NFL seasons with the Packers and won Super Bowl XXXI with Green Bay. The senior Freeman, who had 7,251 yards and 61 touchdowns on 477 career receptions, led the league in 1998 with 1,424 yards en route to making his only Pro Bowl and All-Pro team.
Freeman and the USA sit atop Group D with six points, having advanced to the knockout stage with one group game (against Turkiye on June 25) remaining.
