Rams QB Ty Simpson: I had a 'secret meeting' with Sean McVay before the draft

Another thread about Los Angeles Rams quarterback Ty Simpson has been revealed.

The rookie quarterback told ESPN Radio’s Ian Fitzsimmons on Monday that he had a secret meeting with Rams coach Sean McVay that lasted “an hour.”

“We tried to keep it a secret as long as we could,” Simpson said Monday, via ESPN’s Sara Barshop . “It was something where I knew they were interested, but they wanted to keep it private and didn’t want people to know they were interested. So, I had a couple of secret meetings with Coach McVay and I was just trying to stay on script and do what everybody told me and not tell anybody.”

The news fine-tunes his initial comments Thursday night, in which he said he met with the Rams only briefly in the run-up to the draft. The reality Simpson released on Monday was that two football men were in the weeds for “hours and hours.”

“And it was just football,” Simpson said. “It was just straight football. And it was like a kid in a candy store. He and I sit there, and we just go back and forth. You can tell the obsession he has for the game and you can tell the love he has for the game of a team player.

“It’s something I appreciate and it’s something I enjoy because I enjoy playing the position and appreciate the position. So to be with him and then get to know him and just see how I would be coached if I was lucky enough to go, it was something I couldn’t have asked for a better situation.”

It makes sense to tell the QB not to say anything about a meeting with McVay. Had anyone — Arizona, for example — gotten the idea that the Rams were interested, they could have moved in front of LA at No. 13 and took the Alabama QB first.

Simpson’s telling the story now could help dispel concerns about McVay’s body language immediately after the pick, which made it seem like the coach wasn’t on board with a QB who likely won’t play for at least a year or two with the No. 13 overall pick. Since that press conference, the Rams have been trying to explain McVay’s “grumpy” attitude. Simpson revealing that the two actually had a lengthy discussion before the draft helps quell some of the noise — but not all.
